THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! In 1969, the Supreme Court had just ruled this art rather than pornography, so we announced a screening as part of a conference on pornography and censorship at Notre Dame, a Catholic university. As the lights went down and the opening titles rolled, the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office raided the auditorium. Kathy Cecil quickly grabbed the film off the projector, put it under her dress, and calmly walked outside. She might have made it had not a deputy spotted film trailing out under her dress. Officers wrestled her to the ground, pawing under her dress, and a minor riot ensued as students tried to pull them off her. The cops fired tear gas - I had to grab snow to rinse my eyes. We chased the police across campus until they holed up in the Faculty Lounge where they thought they were safe until Greg Gore took a stone and smashed the locked glass doors. Campus security tried to arrest Greg until he pointed out that his father had donated the building to the University and his dad could damn well donate a new door. The deputies tried to leave campus, but Mike Bresnahan laid down in front of the police car; his picture was on the front page of the newspaper the next morning.
The Sheriff's office had to return the film the next day, and formally apologize to Father Hesburgh, the University president. We showed the film the next day.
